What we're about ....

The Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) is a not-for-profit corporation  founded by philanthropist Ward Melville in 1939.  The organization preserves historic structures, manages sensitive environmental properties and  activities and lectures are  offered covering a broad range of topics representing the organization's concern for  history, coastal ecology, wildlife, and the arts.

Educational programs such as the "Dusty Program" at the Stony Brook Grist Mill, c.1751, "A Day in the Life of a Colonial Child," and "George Washington Spy Ring" at the Brewster House, c.1660.  the "Discovery" Wetlands Cruise, "Coastal Ecology" and "Living Off The Land" in the heart of WMHO's 88-acre Wetlands Preserve, and  Pond Ecology  at T. Bayles Minuse Mill Pond Park reach  12,000 school children from Montauk to Manhattan each year.  Our multimedia distance learning programs such as:

  • "Electronic Explorations: The Salt Marsh Ecosystem"

  • "First Long Islanders: Original Inhabitants"

  • "Windows Through Time: Journals of American Revolutionary War Spies!" and,

  • "The Changing Face of War: The American Spirit Prevails"

enable students across the country and beyond to "visit" in real time and interactively learn about the salt marsh ecosystem, American history, literacy and the life and times of  Native Americans indigenous to the area thousands of years ago.

Show your support….

The challenges of preserving our rich heritage continue into the 21st century.   The costs of maintaining the historic buildings and natural resources, and continually upgrading our programming are substantial.

Fundraising events such as the Long Island Golden Eagle Award Dinner and the Golf Classic help support the historic and environmental preservation and education programs of The Ward Melville Heritage Organization.  Scores of volunteers help make these events a success.

Funding from Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Department of Environmental Conservation, Natural Heritage Trust, Zoos, Botanical Gardens and Aquaria, corporations, along with individual donations help to offset the cost of programming.

Only through annual support are we able to continue these programs and services.  The Ward Melville Heritage Organization is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation, so your donation is tax deductible to the extent of the law.
