Stony Brook, NY – Change is coming to the Stony Brook waterfront. Nick Gregorio, a well-known and talented local marine mechanic has opened his new boating facility, Stony Brook Marine Services, formerly Boatworks Marina, located adjacent to the boat basin and the Stony Brook Yacht Club.

Nick Gregorio (pictured), who grew up in Head of the Harbor, has 25 years of experience with all phases of the marine field. As an authorized dealer for Mercury Marine, Johnson Motors and Evinrude, Nick became a certified marine mechanic in numerous motor lines.

Dave Finkelstein, who is widely known throughout Long Island as an expert in the field, built the original boatyard in 1961.  He moved his company, Stony Brook Boat and Motor, from its earlier home on Sand Street to a newly created waterfront area made by fill from the channel dredging in 1960. In 1970, when fiberglass replaced wooden boats, Dave started a new company, John Dory Boat Works.  In fact, the first of the nearly 15,000 bright yellow John Dories was built at his yard at Stony Brook.  Nick plans to restore the yard to its original condition.

Stony Brook Marine Service is located at 51 Shore Road, Stony Brook, and will offer a wide range of services to the local community, including kayak rentals, gas and diesel outboard and inboard engine maintenance, carpentry, painting, fiberglass repair, hauling, winterizing, shrink wrapping, winter storage, spring commissioning and slip rentals.

Stony Brook Marine Service will also serve as home base for the Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s “Discovery” pontoon boat which offers wetlands tours through Stony Brook Harbor and West Meadow Creek from May through October.
