The Buzz Around Town with Suzie Q

December 2019

Hello Winter!

It is finally time to start finding the perfect holiday gifts for my friends and family, and I know just the place – Stony Brook Village!

As I ventured into the most magical place on Long Island, I was happy to see the beautiful holiday decor throughout the village. The beauty of this place makes it so easy to leave my phone in my pocketbook and just enjoy the world around me!

While I was walking into Inner Court, I passed by a posting of the Holiday Festival taking place on December 8th! I know my nieces would just love to see Santa in the afternoon and then watch him light the tree on the Village Green at 5:30 pm!

The whole day sounds like so much fun for every member of the family – a petting zoo, balloon artists, the promenade of trees and music all day long! There is even a processional of 14-foot puppets called “Legends and Spies”. They portray some of America’s most important spies, as well as other individuals who have played a role in this amazing community – Dorothy and Ward Melville and artist William Sydney Mount.

I can’t wait to see the Model Train Display at the Education and Cultural Center – It brings back all the memories of my brother opening his train set on Christmas morning when we were kids! Speaking of the Educational and Cultural Center, I must remember to reserve tickets for the Gene Kelly Holiday Luncheons! What a great gift idea for Mom and Dad! I think they’d like to go after the New Year, which is perfect because the show runs until January 11th. If you’re looking for another holiday performance, the Jazz Loft is performing the Nutcracker with a 17-piece big band and a vocalist on select dates and times this month!

I was lured into the Village Florist when I walked past its doors. I was met with the sight of everything for the holidays. They have outstanding holiday snowmen and beautiful tree ornaments! Mint had the furriest sweaters and lovely hats – They’d pair so beautifully with the colorful blouses, designer pants and shining jewelry in Loft and Chicos!

Continuing on my way, I noticed that Camera Concepts and Telescope Solutions has the most interesting educational gifts for, from outer space and coding for children – what an excellent way to keep my young ones off of their devices! Keeping young ones in mind, I saw the prettiest holiday pajama and storybook combo gifts at Cottontails. Their outfits for children of all ages are stunning for the holiday season.

On my way into Harbor Crescent, I walked by Premiere Pastry and couldn’t help but pick up a small treat! I absolutely must remember to call and order desserts for the holidays. I saw the most creative holiday tree cupcakes and holiday cakes! I think I’ll stop into Madison’s Niche for that cake platter that I saw to show off the cupcakes and cake.

My favorite way of keeping warm in the winter is grabbing a gingerbread cappuccino from the Village Coffee Market. I also won’t forget to find a new favorite seasonal mug from their collection! They certainly aren’t the only ones embracing the season – Crazy Beans has even altered their flavored lattes to include the merriness of the season! They’ve named them all after classic movies that we all adore!

Classic holiday movies? That reminds me! I heard that Brew Cheese is playing holiday movies every Saturday – what a great way to spread the holiday cheer! Also, who could forget the Country House! As always, it has the most extravagant decorations, as well as a themed pre-fix lunch and dishes titled after famous actors and actresses. Just thinking about those tasty dishes got me hungry!

During my journey throughout the stores, my sweet tooth got the best of me. Luckily, I was right in front of Chocolate Works. Celebrations all around, they had all different sized chocolate Santas, Christmas trees filled with bright foiled candies, great Chanukah trays of decorated chocolates and even chocolate dreidels! Plus, you can decorate your own gingerbread house, holiday pretzel wreath or cookies at almost any time all throughout the month of December.

Stony Brook Village has something for everyone, including the man of the house! Perhaps I can buy him a new sweater, some holiday socks or one of those nice new jackets from Jos. A. Bank.

While enjoying my delicious lunch at Mirabelle, I saw in December they were having “Brunch with Santa” every weekend, a Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day brunch, and perfect for my husband (adorning his new spiffy sweater and socks!), a brunch featuring a live jazz band taking place on December 29th! Pentimento has those wonderful winter cocktails and a new seasonal menu, as well as special menus for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve!

There are still a few family members I need to shop around for…but I’m sure with the one stop shopping here at Stony Brook Village, I’ll find the most wonderful gifts. Actually…now that I think about it, a Stony Brook Village Gift Certificate would be the best way to ensure that they get exactly what they want this holiday season! This one gift certificate can be used anywhere throughout the village. They’re available at the Ward Melville Heritage Organization office located at 111 Main Street in Stony Brook Village on the second floor, right above Cottontails!

For my friends who have moved away from this spectacular community (I absolutely cannot imagine why!), I’ve heard that the folks at the Ward Melville Heritage Organization have launched an online retail website to order items from the Educations and Cultural Center’s gift shop! I can order Stony Brook Village merchandise such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, mugs and even ornaments of different village locations and have them shipped right to my front doors – there’s nothing like being proud of Stony Brook Village and showing it!
